Complete your Juneteenth holiday weekend with The Cypher: The Story of Hip-Hop through Movement, Music & Media

Queens of the Culture: Women Who Made Hip-Hop

The Cypher brings together three people who have dedicated their lives to hip hop — a choreographer (Kim Holmes), a radio DJ (Zeb Powell aka Homegirl Zeb from WYBC Power Hours), and a magazine writer (Courtney Brown) — for an honest conversation about where the culture came from and how it's carried itself through time. From the block parties of the Bronx to the global stages of today, hip hop has always been more than music. It's been a movement, a message, and a mirror. Join us as these three storytellers trace the culture's roots, share what it meant to grow up inside it, and talk about how history shows up in everything they create. Moderated by Dr. Hanan Hameen founder of the New Haven Hip-Hop Conference.

Introduction to the Cypher: Hip-Hop 101 Dance Workshop with Hanan Hameen (Workshop)

Queens of the Culture: Women Who Made Hip-Hop

Introduction to the Cypher: Hip-Hop 101 Dance Workshop is your entry point into one of hip hop's most sacred spaces — the cypher. Led by choreographer Dr. Hanan Hameen, this beginner friendly workshop breaks down the foundational movements and culture behind hip hop dance, giving you the history, the vocabulary, and the confidence to step into the circle. Whether you've never danced a day in your life or you're just looking to connect more deeply with the culture, this is a space where curiosity is welcome and everybody gets to move. Come ready to learn, freestyle, and feel the energy of hip hop from the inside out. DJ Too Much will be spinning throughout the day to keep the energy alive.

Drew Dixon: In the Room Where It Happens

Queens of the Culture: Women Who Made Hip-Hop

Drew Dixon: In the Room Where It Happens is a keynote conversation with one of hip hop's most influential — and most overlooked — architects. As a former VP of A&R at Def Jam and Arista Records, Drew Dixon helped shape some of the most iconic records in music history, working alongside artists like Whitney Houston, Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, Notorious B.I.G., John Legend and Kanye West. She was in the room where hip hop crossed over, broke boundaries, and changed culture forever — but her story, like those of so many Black women in the industry, was nearly erased. In this keynote, Drew speaks candidly about what it meant to be a woman holding creative power in hip hop's golden era, the cost of speaking truth to that power, and what it looks like to reclaim your voice and your legacy.

Curated by Artsucation Academy Network and the International Festival of Arts & Ideas.

Jean Carroll’s suit against Donald Trump and Casandra Ventura’s lawsuit against Sean “Diddy” Combs. Drew currently lives, works, and conceives cool things in Brooklyn.

    Zeb ”Homegirl Zeb” Powell

In hip-hop’s Golden Era, Zeb helped reshape Connecticut’s radio landscape, reaching nearly 50,000 listeners weekly across the Greater New Haven area without any major marketing, sponsorship or corporate backing, and established a blueprint for the success of future formats putting the burgeoning genre front and center.

Wearing multiple hats as on-air personality, producer and Music Director at WYBC 94.3 FM, Zeb was part of the station’s early success story.

She co-hosted the state’s first commercially successful hip-hop format - The Power Hours Rap Show - blazing a trail for Hot 93.7 and 100.9 The Beat. The Power Hours was one of the first to do it with a female on the mic, earning marketshare alongside programs in New York featuring talent like Red Alert, Marley Marl, Chuck Chillout, Stretch & Bobbito, the Awesome 2, and Funkmaster Flex.

One of WYBC’s first female deejays, Zeb was a mixmaster in her own right, spinning on Technic 1200s and producing in-house remixes live on the air during her solo weekday show.

As Music Director, Zeb curated the station’s library directly from major and indie label execs in New York and in L.A., securing early access to new releases that kept the station’s sound fresh and influential. This yielded interviews and guest appearances with artists like Salt N Pepa, Nikki D, the late MC Trouble, Kool G. Rap & DJ Polo, Fat Joe, R&B group Today, comedic actors Martin Lawrence and Chris Rock, and promo opportunities with Big Daddy Kane and the Lost Boyz.

Zeb’s indelible impact on Connecticut radio and the local hip-hop community still resonates loudly. As her favorite artists once said, she “paid the price to make the mic sound nice.”
